يعد الحق السياسي حقاً مهماً ينعم به المواطن لأنه يعكس النظام السياسي في أي مجتمع، فإذا لم يمارس الفرد حقه السياسي، يصبح الحق منحة من الحاكم وبالتالي يستطيع استردادها متى شاء. وتحدد الحقوق السياسية النظام السياسي في الدولة وينظم علاقة الحاكم بالمحكومين، فيما كان نظاماً ديمقراطياً أو نظاماً استبداديا، فالنظام الديمقراطي يوسع من ممارسات الأفراد ويمكنهم من وصولهم إلى الحكم والتعبير عن إرادة شعوبهم بوصفهم اصحاب السلطة الحقيقيين. كما يعبر الحق السياسي على قدرة الشخص على المشاركة في الحياة السياسية من دون الخوف من تمييز أو عنصرية أو قمع، ويتصل هذا الحق اتصالاً وثيقاً بوضع المواطن، فهو يشمل حق الترشيح، وبالتالي يضمن المواطن حرية المساهمة في إدارة شؤون البلاد التي يعيش فيها، فهذا الحق يفترض، اتاحة فرصة المشاركة في الحياة السياسية لكل فرد تتوفر فيه شروط الانتخاب .
