Abstract

Abstract

Fossil fuels, namely coal, oil, and natural gas, are the primary source of energy due to their ease of transport via various means and their high energy density per unit volume. However, with their increasing strategic importance, a number of challenges have emerged that threaten the future of fossil fuels. They are the commodity most affected by political conditions, and they are a non-renewable resource that will eventually be depleted. Furthermore, they are the main cause of environmental pollution and its resulting negative phenomena, such as climate change and global warming. This has prompted countries and international organizations to call for concerted global efforts to mitigate these phenomena, which have begun to threaten the future of life on Earth by calling for a reduction in reliance on fossil fuels and moving towards the development of environmentally friendly energy sources to reduce carbon emissions and leaks that pollute the air, water and soil, in addition to the environmental goal, diversifying energy sources reduces energy dependence on countries that import traditional energy, especially in light of crises and wars that threaten supply chains. However, despite all these challenges, fossil fuels remain the main source of global energy demand as a result of the increase in this demand and the change in part of its maps towards developing countries that impose less stringent environmental restrictions than industrial countries in the OECD countries.
